How often do semi auto pistols suffer from SERIOUS jams?
By serious, I mean experience a malfunction that won't be remedied within 1 or 2 seconds by simply racking the slide. How long might it take to get firing again (worst case) if something like this happens?
Looks like I'm probably going to end up trusting my life to a semi-auto (probably a glock in .40 or .45 auto).
I just hope you guys were right!
The key to a semi auto is to keep it clean. The most common jams are caused by poor maintenance and lubrication. Next, your grip is important. A loose soft grip will result in a "stovepipe" jam where the slide actually catches the upright spent casing and jams, next is proper magazine maintenance. A magazine has feed lips that direct the cartridge into the proper angle to feed into the chamber. Bent or damaged feed lips, or dirty magazines will cause a jam. Lastly is the type of ammo you use. Some firearms won't reliably feed certain bullets without first polishing the feed ramp or throating the chamber. These are easily overcome bya person experienced in shooting a semi automatic. or "fixed" by a gunsmith. BUT, for a beginner, it can be not only intimidating, but dangerous. That is why I always recommend that a new shooter learn on and use a revolver for a while. A revolver is much more forgiving as well as being much easier to clean. Later, they can transition to a semi auto pistol and get some training on how to prevent and how to clear a jam. As for my pistols, I put them thru a very thorough and tough testing prior to carryng or allowing a loved one to carry it for self defense. Among other things, it must be able to fire 250 rounds perfectly, without any failure of any kind. Then, after a good cleaning, it must fire 500 rounds without a failure. If it won't, I find and cure the problem, then repeat the entire testing again. I also do a lot of other steps as part of my testing as well. I carried both revolvers and pistols on duty and off. It depended on the departments regulations. But, I always preferred a pistol chambered in .45acp and still carry one to this day. To put your life, or another persons life on the line with any pistol, you MUST be capable of understanding and reacting to a possible jam or failure to feed within micro seconds. If You Can't, you should be using a revolver. So, to answer you question in the simplest terms: How often do semi auto pistols suffer from a SERIOUS jam? If it is one of mine or one of the ones I set up, NEVER. (or as realistically close to that as possible).
shoot safe
ALLAMA11 I'd wager that was a S&W revolver and that is common in them, you need to use blue loctight and on that ejector and torque it to the proper specs.
