Massachusetts car registration/insurance?

I need a bit of help here people. Most likely from someone in the Mass area. I just bought a car in RI (Private deal, used). I have a Mass license, so that's where it will be registered. My question is pertaining to where the car is being kept. I work and attend college in RI, so that is where my current residence is. Can I set my insurance to RI where I get my mail, and still have it registered in Ma? Or do I need to use a Mass address for my insurance as well? I called the insurance company and they did not have a clue, and I also called the RMV who just put me on hold for 40 minutes.

The question is what is your true current residence? You work, attend college, get your mail in Rhode Island. You don't state it specifically, but I am guessing you sleep in Rhode Island and have "stuff" there and actually reside there even if a relative or parent is in MA. Your license in MA rather than RI is probably already a violation of RI law, and your car should probably match it. You bought the car in Rhode Island, so where is it titled now? The agent certainly can't be certain of what is going on, and the issue you will find is if you have a claim against the insurance policy. On investigation, they could refuse coverage.
Part of it is probably related to whether you are in a campus dorm or an off-campus apartment. To the school, what is your residency? You cannot pick and choose to suit you on cost of each item legally although people do it and deal with the issues when they come up.

You first decide what is your residence legally and everything else flows from there. In the case of the car, you had to register it to drive and likely title it. If that is MA along with your drivers license and the address on the registration and title is MA maybe you do get away with MA insurance. Your age is probably a factor also. Over 18 is an adult.
